Lone Survivor

Horror casual games are not usually my cup of coffee. Maybe because I cower easily. I still remember the first Silent Hill when I was a kid and that game literally scared the shit out of me. And now what we have here is a game called Lone Survivor. This game is tough but fun as hell.

You play as the lone survivor. Alone in a world decimated by creatures, you struggle to find for any survivors. The game’s graphics are great because I just love pixel based games. Controls are easy because it is a side scrolling game.

The combat however is simple. Once you acquire a firearm, you can shoot with the X key. Sadly, the game provides you with one quite. So you must resort in hiding in dark spots and using the flash light int he right time. This isn’t a pure action horror game, instead its a pure horror adventure game.

It has a bit of RPG in it, since you can interact with NPC and objects and use them in different situations. Speaking of using objects you can also use rotten meat to distract monsters. Yes, they have a keen sense of putrid smell.

So check this game out. Its fun and scary!

Casual to Hardcore?

cuttherope

So far casual games still exist. But sadly majority of them don’t get noticed. Even the wonderful Fez game can be depicted as hardcore. Is it because the term hardcore is a feeling or a type of gamer? I guess it is. It surely isn’t a genre. Anyways, back to the main concern.

I don’t know but, sometimes, I do feel that casual gaming MAY fade away. It may fade. If you look at most (not all, definitely not all) the casual games, they have hardcore elements in it such as character development, intricate storyline, and MMORPG elements in it. It can be very depressing, but I do hope that this will stop. I love playing casual games.

We need more games like Cut-The-Rope. Now that game is pure casual. You should check that out. It is fun and super awesome to play and every gamer of all ages will enjoy it. Casual Games should be for every gamers to enjoy. Not only for the hardcore.

30 Awesome HTML5 Games

Since last year, I’ve read and heard a lot about HTML5 games; oftentimes comparing it with Flash. I don’t have the technical knowledge to weigh in on which of the two is better. What I care about is whether a game is fun to play or not.

1. Angry Birds

A game that needs no introduction.

2. Cut the Rope

Cut the Rope is a multi-level physics puzzler created by ZeptoLab. It was originally developed for mobile devices back in 2010. It was later ported to HTML5 as one of the showcase games for Windows8.

Your mission in the game is to find a way to feed the candy to the green monster Om Nom. The candy is tied into a string. You have to cut the string in the correct order and at the right time to deliver it into Om Nom’s mouth.

Google Doodle: Football goalkeeping game

We have another treat from Google – a football goalkeeping game. The mission is really simple, keep the kicker from scoring three goals. The game continues as long as you keep him from scoring 3 goals. It starts off a little slow, catching pace the more goals you block.

As with the other games, I tried to play it a couple of times. My best score, so far, is…

My posts about the previous games:

Google Doodle: Slalom canoe

After the awesomely fun Basketball and Hurdle mini games, Google offers another interactive mini game doodle. This time it’s called Slalom Canoe.

Slalom Canoe

Much like the hurdle game, you have to paddle as fast as you can to the finish line. The controls are almost the same – left & right arrow keys. However, you just don’t press the keys to reach the finish line; they also help you change directions to turn and avoid rocks along the way.

I played the game more than 10 times and I suck at it. My best time is…

Google Doodle: A fun mini hurdle game

What a lovely surprise from Google!

Since the start of the London Olympics, Google has been showing doodles of different events such as fencing, table tennis and synchronized swimming. Today’s doodle comes with a mini hurdle game. The goal is to reach the finish line as fast as you can.

The mechanics is similar to those that we see in other track & field flash games like the 40-yard dash and Sprinter, where you press two keys (left & right arrows) alternately to move the character. Plus, another key for the “leap over hurdle” (space bar).

After more than 10 tries, my highest point was 13.4 seconds.

Awesome!

I saw a post today at 9gag.com challenging 9gaggers to beat his record of 12s. So I went back to the game and tried as hard as I can to become faster. More than 20 tries and numb fingers later…

Run Puma Run

I’m not a big fan of Facebook but I use it to keep track of my friends, some casual gaming websites and shoe companies. It was a surprise when I glimpsed into Puma’s new marketing push – an HTML5 running game. Of course I got excited! I like Puma shoes and, obviously, I love playing casual games.

Run Puma Run is an 8-bit style obstacle running game. You run across a track filled with obstacles like traffic cones, boulders, puddles and hurdles. The game is created by Viget using HTML5, JavaScript & Canvas.

Run Puma Run game

The game starts at ‘normal’ speed then slowly accelerates. After more than 10 minutes of playing it, I still wasn’t able to get past the “Business Casual” speed.

Try it now!

Games Infographic: HTML5 vs Flash

I came across an interesting Infographic by the top flash games aggregator website One More Level. As such, one must take the information provided with a grain of salt.

Flash game has been synonymous to casual browser gaming for more than a decade. It’s sad that such technology is slowly being taken over by HTML5 (Adobe recently dropped support for Flash Player on Android 4.1)…victim of progress.

I tried playing some HTML5 games at TheCasualGuy. As a casual games and Flash fan, here are some of the obvious advantages of Flash over HTML5 that I can point out.

  • Single file distribution
  • Documentation
  • Number of games
  • Better animation (There’s an 12-episode anime created using Flash – Hanoka [video].)
Flash will still be here for the next three to five years. HTML5 will slowly take over as support for it grows. For the meantime, expect to see some of the best flash games that will ever be made. Flash is at its peak.
